POWER OF CHANGE

Change is a funny thing. It’s happening all the time, and yet it can seem both glacially slow and breathtakingly fast. Roy Elmira from the Institute of the Future captures that well, saying “We tend to overestimate the effect of change in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.”

Changing our approach to hospital operations is critical, and it’s starting to happen. Executives and operators are determining how to distill crucial information and concentrate decision makers to get to a higher level of performance. It’s about getting the analytics and the decision makers in the same place at the same time to accelerate decision-making.

Currently, within the walls of most hospitals, you’ll find the bed managers in one place, the staffing coordinators work somewhere else and the OR schedulers are somewhere else. But, what if the hospital had a command center with all of those operators in the same place? What if we provided that team with decision support and risk management analytics? Could we enable them to make better decisions faster?

The health systems that have begun creating command centers are on the leading edge of change that is starting at a snail’s pace, but will soon be happening at breathtaking speed.

How will these markers of change impact your organization?
